Stockholm - Europe's hottest culinary city

During the last decade, Stockholm has become one of Europe's most interesting culinary cities. Imagination and new ways of thinking make Stockholm's restaurants highly commendable. The number of open-air restaurants in central Stockholm increased greatly during the 90s, and in Stockholm's archipelago, more and more gourmet restaurants are being established.

Stockholm is awarded two stars in Guide Rouge
Edsbacka Krog in Sollentuna, just outside of Stockholm, is the first restaurant in Sweden to be awarded two stars in the esteemed Guide Rouge (previously the Michelin Guide). Only 37 restaurants in the world have three stars in the Guide Rouge, 137 have two stars and 218 have one star. Stockholm restaurants with one star include Bon Lloc, Fredsgatan 12, Gsslingen, Operakllaren, Paul & Norbert and Wedholms fisk.
The northern climate allows vegetables to ripen over a long period of time, and Stockholm's cold waters nurture the world's best fish and seafood. And it is the fantastic local produce and the gustatory excesses a skilful artist can conjure up from this which contribute to the high quality standards of the Stockholm restaurant scene.

Design and inspiration
It is typical that Stockholm's leading restaurants cultivate an individual style without looking askance at one another. The most interesting restaurants in Stockholm are those which allow the food to compete with a design-conscious environment for attention. This summer, the Birger Jarl Hotel in Stockholm is taking up this interest in design by hosting the exhibition "Midsummer dream" - Swedish Table Top Design (15 June - 11 August). Glass, porcelain, cutlery, tablecloths and napkins using completely Swedish designs create the perfect atmosphere for the well-laid table.

Food tastes best outdoors
In Stockholm there are 1,200 licensed restaurants. Stockholmers are well known for taking advantage of light and warmth, and during the summer months, they like to eat outdoors. The number of open-air restaurants increased greatly during the 90s. From numbering around a hundred, there are now over 800 restaurants which spread out onto the pavements from April to October. Infrared heat and warm blankets take the chill off Stockholmers long into the night.

Gourmet restaurants in Stockholm's archipelago
In the archipelago, gourmet restaurants are collaborating on a project called "Skrgrdssmak" (Taste of the Archipelago). The aim is to create Europe's best coastal cuisine. The water, fragrances and tranquillity of the archipelago are conveyed using local produce such as meat, vegetables and schnapps. The combination of food and the archipelago attracts visitors to restaurants such as Grinda Wrdhus, an hour's boat journey from central Stockholm. This restaurant, which is situated in an old, turn-of-the-century building in Art Nouveau style, serves classic dishes like Baltic herring as well as more extravagant dishes such as pike-perch. In Stockholm's archipelago, 16 restaurants can boast the Wave, Skrgrdssmak's special seal of quality.

Stockholm Information Service (SIS) is an organisation run by the City of Stockholm and the County of Stockholm, and is responsible for marketing and providing information about Stockholm. The primary task of SIS is to increase the number of visitors to Stockholm, to market the Stockholm area and to develop Stockholm as a destination for visitors. The intended markets comprise both Sweden and other countries.
