In and around Stockholm archipelago

With its 24,000 islands, islets and skerries, the Stockholm archipelago attracts visitors from all around the globe, especially during the summer. Smooth cliffs, wooden jetties and a panoramic view are aspects of the archipelago that really come into their own during the summer months in Sweden. In July, Stockholm also plays host to the international Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race.

It is easy to sail out into the Stockholm archipelago on one of the boats that can be found at one of roughly two hundred landing stages in the city. The more modern vessels will ferry you quickly to the outer archipelago, while the six popular passenger steam boats chug their way between the islands at a more leisurely pace.
A btluffarkort card (SEK 300) entitles you to a full 16 days of unlimited travel on the archipelago boats. You can choose to take day trips or just travel from one island to the other, and you can spend the night at hotels, boarding houses, youth hostels or bed & breakfasts. The newly opened Sandhamns Hotel, with an exotic indoor swimming pool, and the Furusund bathing resort, with its newly renovated Furusunds Wrdshus inn, are both well worth a visit. On 13 May, all of Stockholm's steamers gather with their engines running at the Skeppsbron for the annual "Putsat & Klart" (Polished and Ready to Go) event. The boats are freshly painted and in tip-top shape for the start of the new summer season. The event recreates for a day the once so lively harbour traffic on the waters of Stockholm. On "Skrgrdsbtens Dag" (Archipelago Boat Day), held on 7 June, the Stockholm steam boats depart from Strmkajen in the evening and sail together towards Vaxholm and the archipelago festivities. www.stockholmtown.com/skargarden

Festive atmosphere on the steamer S/S Stockholm
This summer, the newly renovated steamship the s/s Stockholm, built in the 1930s, will join the distinguished company of steamers already in the fleet. This vessel, nearly 50-metres long, is being recreated to look just the way coastal cruisers did in days gone by: lounges, bars, a library, a smoking lounge, a ladies' lounge and a large sunbathing deck. Inspired by the art deco style, the cruiser will create a film-star atmosphere featuring bold designs in chrome, black and red.
The s/s Stockholm will be christened on in Stockholm on 4 May.

Cutty Sark Tall Ships Race in Stockholm
The world's most beautiful sailing ships will be in Stockholm from 26 to 29 July. More than one hundred vessels from around the world will call at Stockholm, where the city's marinas will be transformed into festival grounds. The Cutty Sark Tall Ship's Race, which is an international race for training vessels, is organised by the International Sail Training Association. At least half of the crew on each boat must be between the ages of 15 and 25. More than 100 vessels with a combined total of approx. 2,500 crew members from over 20 countries will be participating in the race. The event will be an international "summit" meeting for those involved in sailing, and there will be plenty of activities and special events open to the general public. More than half a million visitors are expected to attend the festivities.
