Colourful and exciting autumn in Stockholm
The Stockholm summer is nearing its end, and the city�s tempo is starting to pick up again. Below you will find a small selection of events taking place in autumn Stockholm. Attend different sporting events, such as Sailboat Day (Segelb�tens dag), Liding� cross-country race (Liding�loppet) and Stockholm Open. Stockholm has several excellent venues for musical events. This autumn, Depeche Mode, Janet Jackson and Jethro Tull will be among the names to perform in the city. Art enthusiasts will enjoy a visit to the Modern Museum to see the new exhibition of works by Fernando Botero from Colombia, or stopping in at the Hallwyl Museum, which is presenting an exhibition of oriental carpets.
An exciting autumn for sports in Stockholm On 1�2 September, the venerable and well-known sailboat race Sailboat Day (Segelb�tens Dag) will be held on Riddarfj�rden beside the Stockholm City Hall. The race is for classic yachts, and can be watched from a number of central locations. 08 Cross Country will take place on 22 September. Participants in this 114-kilometre mountain-bike race from Arlanda Airport to the Stockholm Stadium cycle through the woods and along the lakes of the beautiful countryside surrounding Stockholm. 08 Cross Country Archipelago Multisport Challenge will take place 21�23 September in Nyn�shamn to the south of Stockholm. The course is 370 kilometres long and is traversed non-stop in the different branches: sea kayak, mountain bike and running. www.swedenmultisport.com Speedway Grand Prix, the World Championship finals will be decided at the Stadium on 29 September. Drivers will include Tony Richardsson. Speedway Grand Prix On 5�7 October, the annual Liding� cross-country race (Liding�loppet) will be held again. It is the biggest such race in the world, and attracts some 25,000 participants from 25 different countries � as well as some of the world�s best cross-country runners. Music for all tastes Music is performed at the Royal Palace on different evenings during autumn. These concerts are famous for their high quality, and featured artists include Peter & Patrik Jablonski performing parts of works for piano on 7 September. Royalfestivals The Globe Arena will rock to modern music on 8 September, when Radiohead comes to Stockholm. Radiohead The musical Evita will be staged at Cirkus on Djurg�rden. Produced by the Gothenburg Opera House, this will be the first professional staging of Evita to be undertaken in Sweden. The musical opens on 13 September and will run until 16 December. Evita Depeche Mode are embarking on a major tour of Europe, and will perform at the Stockholm Globe Arena on 21 September. Depeche Mode Jethro Tull will perform at Cirkus 24 September. Jethro Tull was one of the most progressive folk-rock groups of the 1970s. They were a major force in music during the 70s, and have played more than 2,500 concerts in 40 countries and sold over 60 million albums. Colourful exhibitions at the Modern Museum and at Hallwyl Palace The Modern Museum will present an exhibition featuring works by Fernando Botero, Colombia�s most widely acclaimed artist. The exhibition will run from 29 September to 13 January. Botero is most famous for his rounded, naively drawn portraits of people and animals. Modern Museum From 1 October to 31 December, the Hallwyl Museum will present an exhibition entitled �The Flying Carpet�. Interest in collections during the nineteenth century gave rise to impressive carpet collections in both Europe and America. An interesting Swedish example of this is the countess Wilhelmina von Hallwyl�s collection of oriental carpets, purchased on travels to Northern Africa, the Middle East, Berlin and Paris. The palace that belonged to this countess was turned into a museum when she chose to donate the entire home and the collections to the Swedish state. Hallwyl Palace
Stockholm Information Service (SIS) is an organisation run by the City of Stockholm and the County of Stockholm, and is responsible for marketing and providing information about Stockholm. The primary task of SIS is to increase the number of visitors to Stockholm, to market the Stockholm area and to develop Stockholm as a destination for visitors.
