The circus, snow and ice in winter Stockholm

Winter Stockholm offers many gleams of light. The ice-skating season has taken off, women circus artists are ready to amaze, Olympic stars of cross-country skiing appear, and you can meet many people who push their abilities to the limits. Welcome to a Stockholm that is humming with excitement and commotion.

The Vikingarnnet skating marathon between Stockholm and Uppsala
As soon as the waters have frozen over, skating enthusiasts begin warming up for the Vikingarnnet skating marathon, to be held this year on 10 February, with a reserve date of 17 February. The race is held on the frozen pure waters of Lake Mlaren the source of tap water for many Stockholmers following the old Viking trail between Uppsala and Stockholm. The Vikingarnnet is 80 km long, and participants pass many cultural attractions as they make their way along the course. New this year is the shorter Viking race for people who feel that 50 km is enough of a challenge.

The Circus Princess only women in this troupe
Every spring, the brothers Henry and Robert Bronett present a number of exciting new female circus artists. This year, these women will be competing for the eighth time to win the title of Circus Princess of the World. The winner will be selected by Princess Christina lady Magnusson and an international jury. What makes the Circus Princess so special is the complete absence of men. The Circus Princess is all about what it is to be a human being and a woman dressed in everything from the coolest leather to the sheerest tulle and the great saga of femininity is played out in all its manifestations. The event takes place 724 March 2002.

International stars of cross-country skiing race around the Royal Palace in Gamla Stan
For the second time, Stockholm will host the World Cup competition in sprint skiing. The worlds top cross-country skiers will arrive in Stockholm on 5 March to compete on an 1,100-metre course around the Royal Place in Gamla Stan (the Old Town). The newly chosen Olympic masters will most probably also participate in the race, as the competitions held in Stockholm can be counted as part of the World Cup event as a whole. Stockholm will be holding the penultimate competition in the World Cup series. A total of some 70 women and 80 men are expected to participate.

Sport and adventure in the Stockholm town centre
Swedish children always have a week off school in the middle of winter. To give children, young people and the young at heart something to do during this school holiday, a sport and adventure week is held. This event will take place in one of Stockholms centrally located parks, the Kungstrdgrden, during the period 23 February3 March 2002. Numerous activities are planned, including skating, reindeer sleighing and skiing. There will be merry-go-rounds, simulators, a caf and horseback riding. There will also be presentations of gymnastics and different games. For a complete programme, please contact Kungstrdgrden Park & Evenemang on +46-8-55510090 or at [email protected].
