Great interest in Vikings Interest in Vikings in and around Stockholm continues to grow. Long before the city was founded, people inhabited the countryside around Lake Mlarens confluence with the Baltic. The Swedish Vikings had an important commercial centre around Lake Mlaren, and many Viking raids of the territories to the east began here in Stockholm County (Roslagen). Historians date the Viking era to between about 800 and 1050 AD. At that time, the cultures of the Nordic regions underwent a period of strong growth, and Lake Mlaren and its meeting with the Baltic became the base of the Swedish Vikings and their handicrafts and trade. One of the vigorous commercial cities was Birka on the island of Bjrk in Lake Mlaren, near Stockholm. Today, rune stones and ancient monuments all around Stockholm bear witness to the Viking era. The most important archaeological site is on Bjrk, where many years of excavation have immeasurably improved out knowledge of Viking times. Bjrk has been included on the UNESCO world heritage list since 1993. |
