Swedish Traditions throughout December

Theres plenty to do in Stockholm at Christmastime, and for many Swedes, December is a fun-filled month of decorating, Christmas shopping and enjoying mulled wine (glgg) and gingerbread cookies. December 13th is St. Lucia Day, when traditional Lucia processions featuring beautiful candles and songs are held in churches and schools throughout the city. On St. Lucia Day, Swedes eat delicious saffron-flavored rolls called Lucia cats, which can be found in all bakeries and grocery stores. A real Christmastime institution is the open air museum Skansen, where popular Christmas markets are held on Saturdays and Sundays. On the Stortorget square in Gamla Stan (Old Town), Christmas market booths guarded by traditional Swedish elves are set up every day throughout December. Numerous farms in the County of Stockholm hold traditional Christmas marketsmaking the perfect destination for a day-trip outside the city. Christmas markets are also held in many places on the islands of the Stockholm Archipelago. This year, for example, the Ut Christmas market will celebrate its 25th anniversary. December is also famous for the many concerts held in Stockholm churches, which are filled with choirs and holiday music.
