The Roslagen District
The most northerly part of Stockholm County, called the Roslagen, has had a history that is a
product of the archipelago and the sea. Its most dramatic event was probably the Russian attack
of 1719, during which the entire town of Norrtälje was burned to the ground. Today, Norrtälje
is a charming place, full of wooden houses with large and small squares, idyllic gardens, an
architecturally distinctive hotel and its own city art gallery. Industrial landmark buildings are
preserved at Pythagoras, a cog and gear motor factory from the nineteen twenties. The Roslagen
Museum, in the centre of town is devoted to Norrtälje - past and present. The Norrtälje year is
full of all kinds of annual events, including a chamber music festival and a 1700�s week.
The Wira Works, south of Norrtälje, was once the largest weapon factory in Sweden, but now
provides a peaceful, picturesque look back at this industry. You don�t have to travel far from Stockholm to get a taste of the Roslagen District. Just take the more than 100 year Roslagsbana railway line from Stockholm�s Östra Station. Its route will take you among the gardens of Stockholm�s beautiful old upscale northern suburbs: Stocksund, Djursholm and Täby. As you continue northward, lakes, forests, meadows and pastures will appear right outside your train windows. There are plenty of rune stones and other ancient structures and remains. Take the opportunity to stop at the Täby Kyrkby Station, where you can visit medieval Täby Church, decorated with 1480 vintage murals by the famous Swedish church artist, Albertus Pictor. |
