Here you will find some of the big events during 1998-2000. Some
of them are yearly and some are special one-time events. They usually attract a large
crowd. So don't be late. Major events 1998 and beyond
King Karl XIV Johan - a European career. A new exhibition at the Royal Palace. May-Sept Allotment garden cottages designed by 14 world-famous architects
including Mario Botta, Michael Gravea, Arata Isozaki. At the Swedish Museum
of Architecture. 7 May-12 Aug
Joan Miró: Creator of new worlds. Exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art. 16 May-30

Gardens and Crafts. A number of gardens created around the Rosendal Palace, and in the
park surrounding Prins Eugen's Waldemarsudde on the island of Djurgården. 18 May-31 Oct Emma Lundbergs garden at the Milles Estate Museum. The renovation
of the existing garden with its famous museum of outdoor sculptures by
Carl Milles, in the spirit of Emma Lundberg, artist and landscape gardener.
20 May onwards Orrefors Glassworks celebrates its centenary. An exhibition showing
the world famous glassworks' design history and presenting works by its
renowned artists and artisans at the National Museum of Art. 28 May-11

Art Gallery dealing with tradition and renewal. 29 May-23 Aug
*Music at the Palace - season premiere of classical concerts in a royal environment.
Featuring Swedish and foreign musicians. 16 June(-3 Sept)
*Midsummer celebrations with fiddlers, games and dancing round the maypole at the
Skansen open-air museum, and elsewhere. 19-21 Jun
Stockholm In Harbour Race large yachts race in central Stockholm: Strömmen -
Fjäderholmarna - Lidingöbron. 25 Jun
*"Songs by the Waterside". A presentation of Swedish poets, composers of
popular songsand ballads, interpreters of Swedish history and contemporary life at the
City Hall Park. 26-28 Jun
*Ocean Sailing, "Gotland Runt" starts at Sandhamn. Arrangements the day
before. 28 Jun
*Stockholm Summer Games - international youth tournament in various sports at arenas
throughout Stockholm. 28 June-4 July
Opera week at Gripsholm Castle. Performance of "Prince Bluebeard's Castle" in
the castle courtyard. July
American Festival - cultural festival in Kungsträdgården with artists, food, parade,
cheerleaders and more. 2-5Jul
Jerry Seinfeld show at Cirkus. 3 & 4 Jul
Stockholm pleasure boat regatta. An impressive array of pleasure boats from around the
Baltic gather in Stockholm. 3-6 Jul
*Asian Festival in Kungsträdgården - artists, artwork, food etc from different Asian
countries 10-12 July
Stockholm Boule Festival - competitions, shows and entertainment in Kungsträdgården
Park. 17-19 July
*EuroPride - gay festival including parade, cultural activities, politics, film
festival and partying. 18-26 Jul
Vintage Boat Festival. Classic leisure boats dating from the late 19th and early are on
display at Galärvarvet. 20th 23-26 Jul
Lollipop - music festival at the Ågesta outdoor venue with many Swedish and
international rock and pop performers. 24-25 Jul
The Swedish Athletics Championships at the Olympic Stadium. 24-26 Jul
Rustic Boat Show. A display of traditional Swedish boats in cooperation with the National
Maritime Museum. 24-26 Jul
*Midnight Race - a night-time race through the southern part of the city, with some
15,000 runners. (Always the first Saturday in August.) 1 Aug
The Viking Invasion. Some 30 replicas of Viking ships from Northern Europe invade
Stockholm. 1-3 Aug
DN Galan - international athletics competition with world champions. 5 Aug
"Don Giovanni". Peter Brooks' new rendition will be presented at the Royal
Opera. 6-12 Aug
*Stockholm Water Festival - events and activities on and around Stockholm's waters,
including spectacular fireworks. 7-15 Aug
*Stockholm Water Symposium. International environmental conference on the
world's waters. His Majesty the King awards the Stockholm Water Prize on 13 Aug. 10-13 Aug
*Open-air concert with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in Gärdet Field. 16 Aug

*Strindberg Festival - a cultural festival about Swedish author August
Strindberg, with poetry, drama, exhibitions, etc. 22 Aug-12 Sep
International Organ Festival. Opens with Simon Preston playing the largest organ in the
Nordic countries at Stockholm City Hall. Inauguration of the Schwan organ in Ängsö
church plus many church concerts. 22 Aug-13 Sep
Riverdance - The Show. Irish dance show at the Stockholm Globe Arena. 26-30 Aug
Stockholm Chamber Music Festival 1998. Concerts at the Concert Hall, the Berwald
Concert Hall, the Music Museum and Nybrokajen 11. 28 Aug-6 Sep
International competition for young violinists at the Berwald Concert Hall and
Nybrokajen 11. 29 Aug-6 Sep
*"Tjejmilen" - 10 km race in Gärdet Field, with some 30,000 female runners.

Tournaments at the Drottningholm Palace. 3-6 Sep
Swedish Army Tattoo at the Stockholm Globe Arena. 4-5 Sep
*Stockholm Race - a half marathon (21 km) around Stockholm. Starts and finishes at the
Olympic Stadium. (Always the first weekend in September.) 5 Sep
*Sailboat Day - boat racing on Riddarfjärden and Strömmen. (Always the
first whole weekend in September.) 5-6 Sep
Xpo September - Stockholm Photography Festival. 5 Sep-4 Oct
*"Bellmanstafetten" - Sweden's largest relay race. Starts and finishes at
Frescati. 12 Sep
"Staden" (The City) world premiere of a new Swedish opera at the Royal Opera
House. 12 Sep (-14 Nov)
Depeche Mode in concert at the Stockholm Globe Arena. 13 Sep
Contemporary music by Scandinavian composers at the Concert Hall. 21-27 Sep
Under/Exposed. The worlds largest photographic exhibition on display at
Stockholm's underground stations. 21 Sep-4 Oct
Stockholm International Percussion Event 1998. Kroumata and the worlds foremost
percussionists, ensembles and soloists perform in Stockholm. 29 Sep-3 Oct
*Stockholm Beer Festival - lots of beer, entertainment, food and beer tasting and
courses etc, at the Sollentuna Exhibition Centre. (Always the last weekend in September.)

*The Lidingö Race - the world's largest cross-country race, on the island Lidingö,
outside Stockholm. (Always the first Sunday in October.) 4 Oct
Catherine the Great and Gustav III - new exhibition at the National Museum of Art about
the two royal cousins who ruled Russia and Sweden respectively. 9 Oct-5 Mar 99
Exhibition about Peter the Great and Karl XII at the Royal Armoury - in cooperation
