Stockholm has now officially applied to host the 2004 Summer Olympic Games. A 600-page bid contains all the information the International Olympic Committee (IOC) requires to make its decision. Wodehouse & Dickens are back
The English Theatre Co. of Stockholm will present two true classics this autumn. Firstly, "Good Morning Bill", by P.G. Wodehouse which premieres at the Scala Theatre on October 17. It is a typical English romantic comedy with the whole repertoir of Wodehouseís 1920ís characters. The first night of this seasonís run of Charles Dickenís, "A Christmas Carol" is on December 4. This time, the venue is the Vasa Theatre. This is the tenth year that the play has been staged in Stockholm and in that time it has become a much loved Christmas tradition.

Eco Park now on map and stamp
The worldís first National City Park, the Eco Park, situated right in the heart of Stockholm, is one city excursion not to be missed. With its original use as a Royal hunting ground, the area has been preserved until today. Its Royal status has also meant that there are hundreds of buildings of cultural and historical importance. Within the 13 kilometre long area which the Eco Park covers, is something for everybody. Unspoiled nature, some 30 museums, restaurants, jogging tracks and much more. A newly published map allows you to plan walks and find the best sights along the way.
Four views from the Eco Park have also been used on a set of new stamps, first issued on August 23, 1996. The Swedish Post Office chose a view of the Pelousen, found in the middle of Haga Park and a favourite place to picnic in Stockholm; the Roman-inspired Copper Tent, also in Haga Park; Karl XIV Johanís Palace, Rosendal on DjurgÂrden and the Isblads marshes, also on DjurgÂrden, where many interesting kinds of birds roost and from where you can see the Kaknstornet telecom tower. The new stamps are available in a booklet with a value of SEK 7:50. The original motives were created by Eva Jern and Martin Mörck. Piotr Nasarkowski engraved.

Cab ride in Stockholm? - always check the price
Taxi fares in Sweden are not regulated. This means that fares can vary a lot with different kilo-metre rates, discounts, special offers, etc. The driver is obliged to give you a printed receipt from the taximeter. Many taxi companies offer a fixed price to and from Arlanda Airport. Remember to always ask the fare. You need not to take the first car in line. You can choose the car and taxi company which best suits your needs. At Arlanda Airport there are assistants who can help you choose.

Spaniards, Russians and Poles to Stockholm
July was a very good tourist month with a 14 per cent increase in the number of overseas tourists visiting Stockholm compared to last year. Spanish tourists made up the main-stay of the increase, up a staggering 215 per cent over 1995. The number of Russian tourists visiting the coutnry grew by 150 per cent and an interesting group of newcommers, Polish visitors, increased their share by 118 per cent.
The number of Austrailians in town also grew. Up 54 per cent on last year.
Fresh statistics for the number of overnight stays at hotels, hostels, etc. in the city of Stockholm and throughout the county up until July show an overal increase (Swedish and foreign visitors) of 5 per cent.
A look at which nationalities visited Stockholm confirms that increased marketing efforts have had an effect. The number of visitors from important markets like Germany, Great Britain, Holland and Japan have increased by up to 20 per cent. The number of visitors from the United States went down, however, by 13 per cent. Hotel occupancy rates (rooms occupied in per cent of the total number of available rooms) reached 61 per cent, the highest figure for any month of July since 1990.
Should this positive trend continue, then the likelihood is that Stockholm will, in 1996, set a new record - 6 million overnight stays.
