Go underground in the archipelago
The defence of the sea approaches to Stockholm down the ages has always been a fascinating subject.
Now the archipelago has acquired a museum depicting the defence of Sweden in more modern times. In 1916 work started on an underground fortress, Siaröfortet, on an island near Furusund, and 230 soldiers were based there.
It soon became outdated, but during World War II it was manned again and for many years it was a secret area where landing was forbidden. Today, though, visitors are given a warm welcome.
Below ground there are exhibits describing Sweden's military history and showing the fortress as it was in its heyday, while above ground there is a youth hostel as well as a café in the refurbished barracks accommodation.

Stockholm Time Walk - a photographic tour
Stockholm City Museum's new photographic exhibition is a historic tour through well-known areas of the city.
The photographer Michael Tongue has published a book "The Stockholm Time Walk" which describes a self-guided walk, book in hand, during which one can see areas of the city as they used to look, as shown in contemporary photographs, and compare them with the Stockholm of today.
