1252 First mention of Stockholm - founding of Stockholm by Birger Jarl

1436 Privy Council grants Stockholm its own charter

1520 Stockholm bloodbath - 82 people beheaded at Stortorget in the Old Town

1523 Gustav Vasa is crowned king and takes possession of the city

1634 New constitution; Stockholm becomes the national capital

1654 The first issue of the newspaper "Post and Domestic Newspaper", which is still published today, hits the news stands

1697 The Royal Palace "Tre Kronor" burns down

1753 The Swedish Academy, which presides over the annual Nobel Prize was established

1754 The new Royal palace is completed

1792 Gustav III was murdered at an Opera masquerade ball

1853 Gas lighting installed in Stockholm

1860 Stockholm gets its first railway connection

1891 Opening of Skansen, the worlds first open-air museum

1892 Electric lighting comes to Stockholm

1901  The first Nobel Prize is awarded

1905 The House of Parliament on Helgeandsholmen is completed

1912 Stockholm hosts the Summer Olympic Games

1918 Equal voting rights for men and women

1967 Sweden switches to right-hand traffic

1995 Sweden joins the EU
