The World's longest art exhibition
The world's longest art exhibition can be found in the 110 kilometres
that makes up the Stockholm underground system. The subway is home to a
great many works of art and different artistically decorated train
stations. Here you will find everything from sculptures, paintings and
etchings to water-lily ponds and underground caves. The underground
gallery just gets longer as SL (Stockholms Lokaltrafik/Stockholm's local
underground and bus company) spends around two million Swedish kronor
per year on new additions to its collection.
A long history
The idea to decorate the underground system was first conceived in the
1940's with the building of Stockholm's first underground line. Since
then, more than 125 artists have decorated over 70 of the 100
underground stations giving them colour, form and life.
Underground stations
Examples of underground stations well worth visiting for their artistic
value are Kungsträdgården (Arsenalsgatan entrance/exit) where
there are
a number of antique style statues and pillars as well as paintings and
plants. Another interesting example is the Danderyds Sjukhus Station (in
the pedestrian tunnel) where wall, floor and pillar decorations abound
on the theme "Plants that Heal and Symbols from Folklore". The Stadion
Station is decorated with a number of grand wooden sculptures with a
sporting theme taken from the Summer Olympic Games, which were held in
Stockholm in 1912. At the T-Centralen Station you will find cave-like
arches which are decorated with painted blue shrubs and flowers (See
photo below).
There are many more pieces of art and spectacular train stations to be
found in the Stockholm Underground. Drop by on your way somewhere!
