Stockholm - The city of events

A large number of events take place throughout the year in Stockholm. Among these are festivals such as the Stockholm Water Festival, the Bellman Festival, the Jazz Festival, the Film Festival and the Beer Festival. Another of the city's claims to fame is the name "Running Town Stockholm" which has been a well known description for years. Stockholm stages a number of running races which are more like festivals than sporting events. These range from the "Girl's Mile" (Tjejmilen), which is a ten kilometre long running race for women, to the prestigious international event, the Stockholm Marathon.

Swedes are very interested in sports and Stockholm will play host to many important sporting events in 1996. These include World Cup Handball, the Sweden Hockey Games, the European Athletics Championships, the World Ringette Championships, the World In-door Bandy Championships, the Stockholm Games GP, the Ocean Sailing Race "Gotland Runt" and the trotting race "Elitloppet". The city will also be the venue for a large number of international exhibitions, concerts and displays. During the coming years, Stockholm will have the honour of staging some of the biggest, and most prestigious international events around.

Cultural capital of europe
In 1998 Stockholm has been chosen to be Cultural Capital of Europe. The city won this honour because of its well-preserved medieval city environment, the many museums and the wide range of cultural activities. The program for the year is already in the planning stage and it will include a wealth of cultural events.

World police and fire games
Between 17 and 24 July 1999 Stockholm will be hosting The World Police & Fire Games '99, a world championship event for police and fire-fighters. About 10,000 competitors will be taking part in more than 40 events, both traditional athletics and some more spectacular police and fire fighting sports. One of the more unusual events is "The Toughest Man Alive", an octathlon event which will produce the world's toughest policeman or firefighter. Another event is "muster", which involves transferring water into giant tanks in different ways by using hose pipes and buckets.

Stockholm bids for summer olympics 2004
Stockholm will also apply to host the 2004 Summer Olympic games. The highly functional infrastructure of the city, the many sporting arenas available, the experience and know-how of staging large events as well as the genuine sporting interest of the Swedes are just a few reasons why Stockholm stands a good chance of being selected to hold the games. Strong competition is expected from cities like Cape Town and Rome. The final decision as to which city will host the 25th Olympic Games will be made by the International Olympic Committee in September 1997.
